Evaluation 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
The task I was required to do for the preliminary was to create a college magazine including the conventions of a college magazine and incorporating new skills. For this task I designed and sketched ideas and made a front cover and contents page in preparation for the real task. I had to use own photography also.Looking back at the preliminary task I feel It helped me get my head around how to use a camera and the terminology for print media products. The picture we were to use was specific therefore I learnt how to build up a range of pictures and be selective with the choice i made to suit the brief and theme appropriately. There were a lot of alternative photos to choose from in the preliminary and even more in the real task and the preliminary helped establish what's appropriate and not.
For the main task, we had to sketch and design our magazine, do research on the audience, deconstruct magazines of a similar genre and then create a front cover, contents and double page spread. The preliminary helped me as I learnt the basics of adobe photoshop and how to manipulate a picture. I had never used photoshop before so the preliminary taught me what i needed to know for the real task, because i made mistakes and learnt from them. i learnt how to scale, blur, fade, edit faces, liquidity and i learnt a lot of key editing language. The preliminary introduced me to photography, shots and editing whilst also taught me how to make improvements whilst going a long especially when you're following a design. Not everything can go well or looks right so improvements often need to be made during the process. For example the image for the front page was going to be the two artists shaking hands however, this did not represent the story enough and failed to empower women which is the target audience.
Evaluation 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
·
How
does your media product represent particular social groups?
·
My media product represents a few sectors of society, which is good, as
it will appeal to these social groups. My magazine represents the black
ethnicity, women and men; the black individuals displayed on my front page
denote this. The front page has a woman, which is higher than the man, which
will appeal to women but mainly black woman as it conveys they are strong and
have power over men even though in reality society is patriarchal and typically
the men dominate. In the dps we see the man on the same level, he is dressed
well appealing to men as they either see themselves as him or want to be him. I
believe my mag represents social groups similar to blues and soul (BS)
magazine. Missy Elliot you see her being a dominant boss black woman, and she
is known for being a big name and boss in the industry, similar to my own with
a woman who is better than the man in the very male dominated industry. Aj
denotes a similar stern look that missy Elliot has and both aren’t objectified
for the gratification of men. Aj, the main girl stresses her frustration with
male domination in the article which represents the feminist social group, she
also represents womanism and intersectionalist as she speaks on her experiences
not only as a woman but as a black woman this is something not done a lot in
magazines but a lot of women can identify and it represents them. The conflict
between Aj the woman and zhaun the man can represent the conflict in society
between men and women with women still trying to fight inequalities and gain
respect and fight injustices that some men perpetuate. In the article we see
that zhaun was only jealous of AJ and that drove the beef. In society we see
girls trying underachieving and not having big aspirations in order to not
intimidate or upset the man however we see the unconventional AJ not have it
and fight back. We see AJ having more success and the man trying to push her
down which woman may commonly identify with.
In the magazine there is more
girls than boys with a girl duo on the contents. These girls denote the genre
and don’t have sex appeal therefore they’re not being objectified for the male
gaze but recognized purely for their role in the industry. They represent young
girls and are connoted as quite chill by their posture, which can be similarly
seen in other rnb magazines. Similar with zhaun’s typical urban rnb pose witch
can be commonly seen on neo soul magazines.
Evaluation 5: How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted audience through use of representation and the gratification women get when they see equality in the sexes or female empowerment. Also audiences can be attracted through the clothes and fashion styles they are wearing and informal language and slang which attracts c1 and c2.
In addition use of social media attracts young people
the title is also urban slang which gives young people secrecy as they are the only ones that know what it means the mast head is fun and is similar to billboard mag
The house style is light and easy, relaxing and has a lot of blue which gives off a chill vibe which is very popular with teens all of which i've seen in other RnB magazines
In blues and soul most of the time you see the main artist address the audience to build connections and gratify their fans as they feel apart of their life and the story.
The giveaways attract C1 as they're most likely to be happy with free stuff and attracted by it. The artist whose concert it is will also attract fans from the neo soul genre. The direction 'inside' pushes them to read more.
Evaluation 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The females aren't used for male gazes
Black people are successful
Black women are powerful and successful in a male dominated industry.
By the clothes all of them are wearing, female body not revelled but recognised for talents.

Evaluation 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?
My audience are people that listen to
R&B and neo soul, it’s aimed at the black ethnicity however appeals to
women and men, mainly, women as there is a dominant woman denoted on the front
page, making eye contact and connecting with the audience. In addition it
appeals to young girls, as there are girls on the contents that gives off a
chill and relaxed vibe, they are wearing vintage sunglasses, which anchors the
genre and helps the audience relate their fashion style. Girls would either identify
with them or want to be them and follow the trends they set and clothing they
where. The audience these girls are aimed at is a 14-18 age group however the
front cover aimed more at older people, the age group 16-21. My audience is also aimed at C1 and C2, the lower middle class and skilled working class. This is due to the mise en scene there's not a lot of expensive things and the people are wearing clothes that may be typically worn by youth of the lower middle class. These are casual but urban clothes. The 'Urban' style can be associated with the working class and the black ethnicity.
