How
does your media product represent particular social groups?
·
My media product represents a few sectors of society, which is good, as
it will appeal to these social groups. My magazine represents the black
ethnicity, women and men; the black individuals displayed on my front page
denote this. The front page has a woman, which is higher than the man, which
will appeal to women but mainly black woman as it conveys they are strong and
have power over men even though in reality society is patriarchal and typically
the men dominate. In the dps we see the man on the same level, he is dressed
well appealing to men as they either see themselves as him or want to be him. I
believe my mag represents social groups similar to blues and soul (BS)
magazine. Missy Elliot you see her being a dominant boss black woman, and she
is known for being a big name and boss in the industry, similar to my own with
a woman who is better than the man in the very male dominated industry. Aj
denotes a similar stern look that missy Elliot has and both aren’t objectified
for the gratification of men. Aj, the main girl stresses her frustration with
male domination in the article which represents the feminist social group, she
also represents womanism and intersectionalist as she speaks on her experiences
not only as a woman but as a black woman this is something not done a lot in
magazines but a lot of women can identify and it represents them. The conflict
between Aj the woman and zhaun the man can represent the conflict in society
between men and women with women still trying to fight inequalities and gain
respect and fight injustices that some men perpetuate. In the article we see
that zhaun was only jealous of AJ and that drove the beef. In society we see
girls trying underachieving and not having big aspirations in order to not
intimidate or upset the man however we see the unconventional AJ not have it
and fight back. We see AJ having more success and the man trying to push her
down which woman may commonly identify with.
In the magazine there is more
girls than boys with a girl duo on the contents. These girls denote the genre
and don’t have sex appeal therefore they’re not being objectified for the male
gaze but recognized purely for their role in the industry. They represent young
girls and are connoted as quite chill by their posture, which can be similarly
seen in other rnb magazines. Similar with zhaun’s typical urban rnb pose witch
can be commonly seen on neo soul magazines.
